Portland Types of Child Custody

Attorneys Dedicated to Handling Child Custody Cases in Oregon

Child custody is a legal term that describes the legal, practical and physical relationship a parent has with his or her child.  When parents of children are no longer involved in a relationship with one another, they will have to address the issue of child custody, which may be awarded to one or both of them.

Different Types of Child Custody

There are several different types of child custody that may be awarded to one or both of the parents.  Below the different types of child custody are listed and described:

Sole Custody:  when one parent has custody of the child

Joint Custody: when custody of the child is shared between both parents

Sole Physical Custody:  when the child lives with one person on a daily basis

Joint Physical Custody:  when the child lives with both parents for a set period of time (typically the child will spend half of his or her time with each parent)

Sole Legal Custody:  when one parent is awarded the responsibility of making decisions pertaining to the child’s health, daily activities, schooling, and religion

Joint Legal Custody:  when both parents are responsible for making decisions pertaining to the child’s health, daily activities, schooling and religion

Visitation:  when a parent is not awarded joint or sole custody of his or her child, he or she may be granted “reasonable visitation” with his or her child
